Josh Johnson Highlights Reflecting Pool’s Unexpected Tourist Appeal

Reflecting Pool’s Unusual Popularity

Josh Johnson brought attention to the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial during Tuesday’s Daily Show, calling it the summer’s breakout hit. The pool’s algae and discoloration issues have unexpectedly boosted its appeal as a tourist destination.

Johnson humorously remarked, Hey, kids, remember you wanted to go to Disneyland? Instead, we’re going to go see the world’s largest kombucha! This comment underscored the odd fascination with the pool’s current state.

Historical Context of Gatherings

Johnson reflected on how the pool has gathered crowds in the past, drawing a contrast between historical significance and current curiosity. He said, The last time we collected this many people around the Reflecting Pool was for civil rights. People were like, ‘We must come out to support Dr. King.’ Sixty years later, we’re like, ‘A slimy pool? This I gotta see!’

Challenges of Pool Maintenance

The pool’s algae problems are not surprising to those familiar with maintaining similar environments. Johnson noted, Now anyone who’s ever owned a swimming pool or a fish tank or a bong that they never wash will not be surprised there’s algae in the pool. And a shallow pool like this, with a dark bottom in hot weather, is particularly hard to keep clean.

He humorously added that, half the people I follow on social media are pool experts all of a sudden.

Satirical Commentary on Public Perception

Johnson’s commentary included a critique of political boasting, humorously suggesting that former President Trump might have avoided the attention if he hadn’t highlighted the pool’s renovation. Johnson quipped, Trump basically shot a buzzer-beating game-winning shot, turned around and threw his hands up in the air to celebrate, and then instead of going in, it missed and killed a baby duckling. Now you got people across the country coming over to gawk at the fact that you turned the reflecting pool into a Kool-Aid bucket.

The Reflecting Pool’s situation serves as a humorous metaphor for mishandling public relations, according to Johnson’s set.
