Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis are adapting their concept album, Warriors, into a full-fledged Broadway musical. This production draws inspiration from the original 1965 novel and its subsequent 1979 film adaptation, which gained cult status with its dystopian narrative.
The tale follows the Warriors, a street gang, as they journey from the Bronx to Coney Island, Brooklyn. Their path is marked by conflicts with rival gangs and pursuit by law enforcement. Notably, Warriors will mark Miranda’s first musical endeavor since the success of Hamilton.
The musical adaptation is set to start previews next March, with the official opening planned for April at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Directing the project will be Jenny Koons, with Miranda and Davis crafting the book. Details on casting have not yet been disclosed.
The artists expressed their enthusiasm, stating, “Musicalizing such a vibrant world for the concept album has been a thrill, and now we’re coming out to play on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne. We can’t wait.” The album, released in 2024, retains the core of the story while making impactful changes, such as portraying the Warriors as an all-female gang.
The album showcases an impressive lineup, featuring talents like Ms. Lauryn Hill, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Billy Porter, and others, including Ghostface Killah, RZA, Marc Anthony, Colman Domingo, Cam’ron, Shenseea, and Joshua Henry.
Musically, Warriors is rich with diversity, incorporating salsa, ska, agro-rock, boy band pop, old-school rap, and K-pop elements. The album contains multilingual mixes, with Spanish and Korean accompanying English lyrics. Highlights include songs like “We Got You,” a captivating R&B piece performed by a cardigan-wearing male gang, and “Quiet Girls,” a stirring feminist anthem.
