Darializa Avila Chevalier secured victory in the Democratic primary, defeating incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat. Chevalier, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), received endorsement from Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York City.
The 13th District covers areas like Washington Heights and Harlem. Theo Chino-Tavarez and Oscar Romero were also candidates in the race.
New York’s 17th Congressional District
In another significant development, Cait Conley, a former national cybersecurity expert, emerged as the Democratic challenger to Republican Rep. Mike Lawler after winning the primary. Conley promises to address housing costs, affordable childcare, and healthcare.
The 17th District includes Rockland and Putnam counties and parts of Westchester and Dutchess counties.
New York’s 12th Congressional District
Micah Lasher, a State Assemblyman, won the Democratic primary in the 12th District. He will face candidates from other parties in November.
The district includes parts of Manhattan such as the Upper West Side, Upper East Side, and Midtown. Lasher received endorsement from Rep. Jerry Nadler, who is retiring, as well as from former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor Kathy Hochul.
New York’s 7th Congressional District
Claire Valdez has been projected to win the Democratic primary, succeeding Rep. Nydia Velazquez, who is retiring. Valdez, endorsed by the mayor, faced competition from Vichal Kumar, Antonio Reynoso, and Julie Won.
The 7th District covers portions of Brooklyn and Queens.

The following candidates also secured victories in their respective primaries:
- Rep. Thomas Suozzi in the 3rd District

- Rep. Yvette Clarke in the 9th District
- Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the 14th District

New York’s 10th Congressional District

The 10th District covers areas including Lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. Lander received support from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Senator Bernie Sanders.
Mayoral Endorsements and Voter Turnout
Mayor Mamdani’s endorsements in various races have been under scrutiny. He supported Claire Valdez, Brad Lander, and Darializa Avila Chevalier, opposing influential Democrats like Governor Hochul and Rep. Nydia Velazquez.
There are concerns about voter turnout. New York City reports 420,527 voters turned out, with early voting totals influencing the results.
