Lionel Messi made history by scoring his 17th World Cup goal during a Group J match against Austria, breaking the record for the most goals in the tournament’s history.
However, not everyone agrees the goal was legitimate. Peter Schmeichel, a commentator for FOX and a former Danish goalkeeper, criticized the decision to allow the goal during the network’s halftime show. He argued that Egyptian referee Amin Mohamed Omar should not have permitted the goal.
I don’t think that goal should have stood,Schmeichel stated, referencing an earlier penalty against Austria. It was a kick from behind, through the player. Now, this should be a free kick.
The incident Schmeichel referred to occurred following a throw-in. Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister tripped Xaver Schlager from behind. Despite Schlager falling to the ground, Messi scored moments later.
Schmeichel continued to insist, That should have been a free kick. VAR should have taken that back. That is a clear and obvious mistake by the referee.
Despite Schmeichel’s objections, Argentina led 1-0 and looked poised to start the tournament with two consecutive wins. They had beaten Algeria 3-0 earlier, thanks to Messi’s first World Cup hat trick, marking a strong start on June 16.
Messi’s four goals in this tournament not only positioned him as the leading World Cup goal scorer, surpassing Miroslav Klose of Germany, but also as the first player to score in six consecutive World Cups.
The Argentine star might also secure the title of top distributor in the World Cup’s history. He’s tied with Diego Maradona for the most assists, with eight, achieved over five tournaments.
After the game against Austria, Argentina will face Jordan on Saturday at 10 p.m. in Dallas to conclude the group stage. They aim to continue as defending World Cup champions.
