Federal Judge Quashes Subpoenas Against Minnesota Officials

A federal judge invalidated six grand jury subpoenas issued by the Trump administration against Minnesota state and local government offices, stating they were retaliatory and unlawful. The ruling is seen as a victory for Minnesota against coercive measures related to immigration enforcement.

Background of the Subpoenas

U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz determined that the subpoenas were part of a pressure campaign to make Minnesota officials cooperate with federal immigration efforts following their legal challenge against Operation Metro Surge. The subpoenas were served to various offices, including the governor’s and mayors’ offices, as well as county boards.

Using grand jury proceedings to force political opponents into taking action they are not required to take is unlawful and unethical, Judge Schiltz wrote.

Judge’s Findings

Judge Schiltz criticized the Justice Department for failing to provide any investigative reasons for the subpoenas. He stated that the subpoenas were clearly issued for forbidden purposes.

Reaction from Minnesota Officials

Governor Tim Walz hailed the ruling as a victory for democracy and the rule of law, stating that the Justice Department was unfairly targeting political opponents. As the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2024, Walz emphasized the need to uphold justice nationwide.

Minnesota Attorney General Ellison expressed concern over what he described as Donald Trump’s misuse of the criminal justice system against dissenters.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey critiqued the investigation, calling it politically motivated and detrimental to democracy. He emphasized the right of elected officials to speak against government decisions without fear of repercussion.

Absence of Comment

The Department of Justice did not immediately provide a comment on the ruling.
