Assault at Pickleball Game in St. Augustine

A pickleball game in St. Augustine, Florida, turned violent when a woman attacked a man with her pickleball paddle, leading to her arrest. This incident shows how tensions can escalate unexpectedly during recreational sports.

Details of the Incident

Michele Bannister, aged 47, is facing serious legal charges. According to News 4 JAX, she allegedly used the paddle to hit the man multiple times in an argument. Bannister claimed self-defense, but the arrest report noted that witnesses and the victim stated her son was not in any danger.

The argument started on May 31 over who should retrieve a ball during a pickleball match, escalating to violence when Bannister intervened in a dispute with her son. As per the deputies, Bannister struck the man in the head, causing significant bleeding from several facial cuts.

Legal Consequences

Bannister, an orthopedic nurse, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Additionally, she allegedly provided false identification to law enforcement, adding another charge to her case.

Eyewitness Account

Pam Hatch, known as Pickleball Pam and the North Florida Ambassador for USA Pickleball, witnessed the aftermath. She described the scene as chaotic, noting that Bannister delivered about six forceful blows with the paddle. Hatch helped the victim manage the bloody situation after the attack.

This incident highlights how sports, while generally peaceful and recreational, can sometimes lead to unexpected and extreme conflicts.
