Lessons from a Father: Reflections on Fatherhood

Father’s Day holds special significance for countless individuals, celebrating the relationships shared with paternal figures. This particular Father’s Day has a different hue for me as it’s the first without my dad, Leo E. Perino, who passed away recently after a life dedicated to work and family.

My dad loved his daughters and was a wonderful father figure for both myself and my sister. Reflecting on his life, I’ve drawn upon five impactful lessons that have greatly influenced my path to success and personal happiness.

Equality from the Start

Growing up in the 1970s, a time when the ‘girl power’ movement began gaining traction, my father exemplified equality without the need for speeches. He fostered an environment that allowed us to believe girls could achieve anything. His words and actions instilled confidence, allowing us to aim high and achieve our goals.

The Importance of Education and Reading

Education was paramount to my dad, who prioritized reading and learning from an early age. He initiated a tradition where I’d read newspapers and discuss selected articles with him, teaching me not only to read but to think critically. This foundation laid the groundwork for my comprehensive understanding and engagement with the news.

Encouraging Thoughtful Conversations

Articulation of thoughts with confidence is a skill that needs nurturing. My dad did this by engaging me in discussions about news and politics. This practice built my comfort in expressing ideas to influential figures and large audiences. Fathers who cultivate such skills in their daughters will notice their increased confidence in various settings.

Faith and Values

Attending church regularly was a fixture in our lives, marked by sometimes playful arguments with my sister over service timings. This experience instilled in us solid values and faith in a higher power, providing solace during times of loss and enhancing our joys.

Leading Without Judgment

Support without judgment was an invaluable trait of my father. When faced with a shift in my career aspirations post-graduation, my father’s response was comforting and supportive. He epitomized a safe haven for both my sister and me, encouraging us to pursue our paths without fear of judgment.

As my father’s life came to a content end, his presence continues to resonate. His unread pages of a favorite book serve as a poignant reminder of his love for life. To all the girl dads, your influence is profound and appreciated.
