Far-Left Candidates Challenge Democratic Party Establishment

John Roberts and Shannon Bream delve into how far-left Democratic candidates, such as Zohran Mamdani, are attempting to reshape the Democratic Party. Backed by Bernie Sanders, these candidates are challenging the established Democrats in New York primaries. Their focus lies in advocating for socialist policies aimed at tackling affordability issues. This effort marks a noteworthy internal shift within the party.

Meanwhile, the America Action Network (AAN), a conservative nonprofit aligned with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has invested over $37 million in addressing cost-of-living issues. “The cost of living is the number one issue on the minds of working families right now,” stated Chris Winkelman, AAN’s president, to Fox News Digital. This financial commitment underscores affordability as a significant topic expected to be pivotal in the 2026 midterms.

In light of inflation’s recent rise, AAN believes Republicans can successfully leverage affordability as a key message to connect with voters. They’ve emphasized this theme in several advertisements, highlighting achievements under Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill. Recent developments include President Trump returning from Beijing, having met with China’s President Xi Jinping.

“The American comeback is here. President Trump and House Republicans are delivering for the American people, keeping their promises and delivering the change they demanded,” an ad claims.

A Fox News poll reveals that 58% of voters identify the cost of living as their primary economic concern, up from 50% in February. The Democratic Party’s focus on affordability contrasts with President Trump’s promises, which have faced challenges due to the war in Iran and rising gas prices. Inflation reached 4.2% in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an issue highlighted by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.

Despite this, AAN and other Republicans criticize Democrats for opposing relief measures in the Big Beautiful Bill, arguing that such opposition would have led to tax increases. Richard Hudson, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), asserts, “House Democrats continue proving they’re out of touch with the concerns of everyday Americans.” Republicans remain focused on affordability, public safety, and border security.

In a $3 million ad campaign across Florida, Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, and Washington State, AAN targeted Democrats. An example includes an ad stating, “Marie Gluesenkamp Perez must have a short memory. She clearly forgot about us when she voted for the largest tax hike in American history.” AAN has suggested more initiatives are forthcoming.
