Shift in Republican Party’s Approach to Unions
Vice President JD Vance, along with several House Republicans, is advocating for union-friendly legislation, marking a novel direction for the Republican party. Paul Gigot highlights legislation such as the Railway Safety Act and mandatory arbitration for labor contracts, which critics argue are designed to create union jobs without improving safety. This approach is perceived as a strategy to attract blue-collar workers and gain the endorsement of the Teamsters by 2028. Concerns are rising about economic consequences and the potential for increased deregulation.
Railroad Union Leadership Under Scrutiny
Fox News reports that a major railroad union is facing criticism as a watchdog group suggests its leaders improperly funneled funds to Democratic causes opposed to the Trump administration. The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division (BMWED-IBT), a prominent rail union with 37,000 members, allegedly utilized union resources to support Democratic priorities. These actions, according to the American Accountability Foundation (AAF), betray its working-class members who endorse the Trump agenda.
The leadership’s progressive alignment is a stunning betrayal of the large proportion of its working-class members who support the MAGA agenda and President Trump’s leadership.
The report indicates the union’s leaders have favored leftist causes and organizations, including Black Lives Matter, abortion, and universal health care, while opposing Trump’s policies. This disconnect highlights a growing divide between union leadership and rank-and-file members.
Spending and Political Affiliations
The AAF report reveals that BMWED-IBT has donated substantial funds to left-wing organizations, with significant contributions totaling over $441,098 to groups like the Center for American Progress. The union also supported the Democratic Party by contributing about $13.76 million to its committees in contrast to $729,846 to Republican committees through the Teamsters’ PAC.
Despite this, recent surveys show a significant portion of union members backing Trump. Polls indicate most labor union supporters lean towards Trump, with a 60/40 split reported in favor of him in Teamsters polling and a 56% to 42% preference for Trump over Harris in exit surveys from the 2024 election.
Criticism of Unions’ Spending Habits
The report outlines wasteful spending practices within BMWED-IBT, highlighting the disparity between leadership salaries and member earnings. Union President Tom Jones voiced concerns over extravagant expenses, including $233,492 for Cardwell and $206,709 for Secretary-Treasurer Dale Bogart in 2024. The report alleges millions spent on hotels, conferences, legal fees, promotional merchandise, and travel.
Significant spending at casinos and resorts, including $522,281 at Caesars Entertainment, is cited as evidence of misaligned priorities within union leadership.
Union’s Response and Political Engagement
Bearing a budget surplus, the union asserts fiscal responsibility under the leadership of President Tony D. Cardwell. BMWED-IBT emphasizes its efforts to secure favorable policies for railroad workers, supporting bipartisan legislation where beneficial. Cardwell confirmed the union’s collaboration with Republicans, mentioning support received from Trump and Sen. Josh Hawley on rail safety issues.
Despite critiques of Democratic ties, BMWED-IBT has actively worked alongside Republicans on critical rail safety measures following a major derailment incident in Ohio. This collaboration includes backing from figures like Vice President JD Vance and an increased Republican interest in rail safety legislation.
A similar trend involving Democratic alignment can be seen in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET), another historic labor union, as reported earlier by AAF.
