President Donald Trump officially revealed his new Air Force One jet, which has been a source of contention due to its gift by the Qatari government. During a ceremonial event at Joint Base Andrews, located just outside Washington, Trump announced that the aircraft will participate in a flyover on July 4. This event will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The Boeing 747, resplendent in red, white, and dark-blue colors, marks a shift from the previous lighter blue scheme. Trump plans to use this jet for various events celebrating the nation’s milestone anniversary. As he descended the steps of the plane, Trump stated, “Nobody tops this one, and that’s the way we have to have it for our country. Nobody even comes close.”
During his remarks after touring the newest aircraft in the presidential fleet, Trump emphasized the flyover will involve numerous other military planes and promised it will be unlike anything seen before.
The president praised the jet for its size and grandeur, describing it as the “largest and the greatest in every aspect.” He referred to it as a “flying White House at a level of luxury no one has ever seen before.” Trump also mentioned that his upcoming return trip from the G7 summit in France will be his last on the current fleet.
The plane is valued at $400 million, but the U.S. government’s modifications and readiness preparation likely increased the costs significantly. The Qatari gift led to bipartisan concerns regarding the appropriateness of accepting it, as well as the security and ethical implications. Experts estimate that the project’s total expense, inclusive of security upgrades, could exceed $1 billion.
