A traveler infected with measles potentially exposed passengers at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and guests at a nearby hotel earlier this month. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health highlighted this concern on Wednesday.
Details of the Measles Case
The traveler, arriving on Cathay Pacific Flight CX 884 on June 11, was found to be infectious while traveling through Los Angeles County. This case raises concerns about potential exposure at LAX and the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel. This is the sixth reported measles infection in Los Angeles County in 2023.
Health officials suggest that the risk of exposure may increase with the summer travel season and the influx of international visitors for FIFA World Cup events.
Exposure Locations and Times
Officials identified that those present at the Tom Bradley International Terminal between 10 a.m. and noon on June 11 could have been exposed. Also, a potential exposure was identified at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on the same day.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is collaborating with local health departments to inform passengers seated near the infected traveler on the flight. Symptoms can develop between seven and 21 days after exposure, with July 2 being the last date to monitor for symptoms.
Health Recommendations
“As measles cases increase, it is important that residents take steps to make sure they are fully protected,” stated Los Angeles County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis. “The MMR vaccine is the safest and most reliable way to prevent measles and protect yourself, your family, and your community.”
Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a rash starting on the face and spreading to the rest of the body.
