Fans are expressing their opinions after Tom Holland revealed his choice for the next Spider-Man. Holland, who will reprise his role as Spider-Man in the upcoming movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day, shared his pick with Esquire.
Holland mentioned how Robert Downey Jr. was a mentor for him during his first three movies and expressed a desire to be a mentor for the next Spider-Man. Holland revealed his choice by stating, “Owen Cooper would be awesome.” Holland highlighted Cooper’s talent and his current prominence in the industry. Cooper, 16, gained recognition for his role in Netflix’s Adolescence and won various awards, including Best Supporting Actor at the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, British Academy Television Awards, and Emmys for his performance in a limited series.
Fans reacted on social media after Holland’s statement. One fan commented, “Owen Cooper was phenomenal in Adolescence. He absolutely has the acting chops for Peter Parker.” Another fan expressed excitement about the potential casting, saying, “If Marvel actually pulls the trigger on this, the casting would be absolutely elite.”
Holland’s forward-thinking approach was praised by another fan who noted, “Tom Holland already thinking about the future—classy move. Owen Cooper is the hot name right now, and Holland’s endorsement carries weight. Passing the torch with grace.” However, some fans are not yet ready to see Holland move on, as noted by a fan who wrote, “Tom Holland out here doing God’s work by naming his successor Owen Cooper as the next Spider-Man? I see the vision but I’m still not ready to say goodbye to Tom’s Peter Parker.”
Holland had previously discussed his vision for the franchise in an interview with Empire. He expressed his willingness to help set up the next chapter, whether it involves characters like Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, or Spider-Woman. Holland stated, “For whoever’s next, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter. Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to premiere on July 31.
