Police have initiated an investigation into the death of a man discovered with a gunshot wound after responding to a fire on the Near South Side of the city.
Officers arrived at a fire located in the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue shortly after 5 p.m. Inside a building, they found a 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his head.
The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He suffered from a gunshot wound, a neck laceration, and smoke inhalation. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday. A weapon was recovered at the scene. No offender information is available as detectives from Belmont Area continue their investigation.
