Jalen and Rick Brunson Celebrate New York Knicks’ NBA Championship

On Saturday night, Jalen Brunson shared a heartfelt embrace with his father, Rick Brunson, after the New York Knicks secured their first NBA Championship in 53 years. This moment was not solely about basketball.

After the victory, Jalen first acknowledged Coach Mitch Johnson from the San Antonio Spurs. “I hugged Coach Johnson to show respect,” Brunson shared on “CBS Mornings.” “It’s how I was raised. Win or lose, showing respect is important, and I have a lot of respect for them,” he said, referring to the Spurs, who finished the season with the second-best record despite losing in the Finals 4-1.

Rick Brunson, who has served as an assistant coach for the Knicks since 2022, was part of their 1999 Eastern Conference championship team as a player. Reflecting on his journey, Jalen reminisced about their early days in the park. “Everyone sees the videos, but they don’t hear the deeper conversations asking if basketball is what I wanted,” he said.

Although some perceive Rick’s approach as tough, Jalen explained, “It was always my choice to play. My dad had the blueprint.” Rick added, “Basketball parallels life. Hard work and habits on the court build character.” He emphasized that his role was mostly encouragement and guidance while Jalen put in the work.

Jalen credits his parents for his leadership style. “Both my mom and dad influenced me. They balanced love and discipline effectively,” he noted. After winning the Finals MVP, Jalen maintained composure during a challenging moment in Game 3, showing his ability to stay focused under pressure.

Despite Jalen’s success, Rick still regards Patrick Ewing as the greatest Knick of all time. “Patrick Ewing was a dedicated player for 15 years. Jalen’s success is notable, but Ewing’s consistent performance stands out,” Rick said, suggesting a reevaluation in the future.
