Senator Raphael Warnock, a Democrat from Georgia, is urging the United States to adopt a stronger moral imagination through his new book. Warnock, who became Georgia’s junior U.S. senator after serving as senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, draws on his religious background to inspire change. This church once had Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as its leader, deepening Warnock’s connection to social justice.

In 2023, Warnock delivered a sermon at Washington National Cathedral to mark Juneteenth, focusing on the prophet Isaiah’s words. He quoted, “Every valley shall be exalted, every mountain and hill shall be made low, the crooked places shall be made straight, the rough places smooth, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.” This reflects his message of equality and unity.

Warnock’s book, The Crooked Places Made Straight: Reflections on the Moral Meaning of America, explores the idea that democracy is a spiritual concept put into political practice. During an interview with Michel Martin from Morning Edition, Warnock emphasized that America’s issues stem more from moral struggles than political differences. He stated, “What we’re dealing with right now is not the difference between right and left, it’s really the difference between right and wrong.” He also criticized his party for allowing the right to dominate discussions on faith and values.

Warnock argues that faith leaders should address systemic injustices rather than focusing solely on personal morality. He calls for a wider moral vision in the political arena, encouraging Americans to engage with profound ethical considerations. This perspective aims to bridge divides and promote justice and fairness in public life.
