Video footage captured the moments after Los Angeles police fatally shot a dog wearing a New York Knicks jersey. Officers were responding to reports of a screaming woman, which turned out to be a celebration of the Knicks winning the NBA championship.
The incident occurred on the night the Knicks clinched the NBA Finals on a Saturday. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) released a statement explaining that officers were dispatched to a report of a ‘screaming woman’ in Canoga Park, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley.
The person who reported the screaming led officers to a specific apartment. A resident opened the door, and a “large dog” began barking at the officers, according to the LAPD.
“The officers asked her to secure the dog,” the release stated. “She re-opened the door, and the dog exited the apartment, charging at one of the officers.”
This led to an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that resulted in the dog’s death. The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services was informed and took custody of the dog. The owner’s girlfriend identified the dog as Jameson, and she cooperated with the investigation.
A widely-viewed TikTok video shows a woman lying over the deceased dog, wearing a blue and orange t-shirt, and expressing her grief. “The Knicks just won the championship,” she cried. “We were just celebrating the Knicks.” Around her, half a dozen officers stood by.
Voices off-camera criticized the situation, with one person shouting about the presence of drug dealers and violence, questioning the officers’ priorities.
The LAPD clarified to NBC Los Angeles that the woman’s shouting was due to celebration. The Knicks had beaten the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, bringing New York its first NBA championship in 53 years.
