Former professional wrestler and actor Tyler Mane, known for roles in “X-Men” and “Halloween,” has revealed his diagnosis of breast cancer. He shared this information publicly to address the often-overlooked condition in men.
Mane stated, “I have some bad news. I start chemo today.” He highlighted that one in 750 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. His aim is to raise awareness since this condition is usually associated with women.
Mane shared, “Because it’s rarely talked about, it’s usually found at later stages and has worse outcomes. I want to change that.”
Men, like women, have a small amount of breast tissue. According to the Mayo Clinic, while women develop more tissue during puberty, the biological foundation for the disease is present in everyone. Male breast cancer, however, is rare, representing less than 1% of all global cases.
Routine screenings, such as mammograms, are not standard for men, leading to diagnoses often occurring much later than in women. This late-stage detection shortens survival rates and highlights the importance of awareness.
Male breast cancer symptoms include a hard, painless lump near the nipple, skin dimpling, nipple retraction, or discharge. Treatments generally align with women’s, involving surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone therapy as needed.
Mane is using his public platform to normalize male health discussions and encourage early detection. He urged his followers to spread the word, stating, “Send this to 10 of your friends and have them follow me, because people need to hear this.”
