The Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act of 2026 is drawing attention as UFC founder Dana White leads its controversial revival. This bill, an update of the 2000 law, allows new “Unified Boxing Organizations” (UBOs) to sign fighters, promote fights, create rankings, and award titles under one system. The Congressional Budget Office highlights that UBOs would manage contracts, promotions, rankings, and titles.
Nico Ali Walsh’s Standpoint
Nico Ali Walsh, Muhammad Ali’s grandson, shared his concerns with White regarding the use of his grandfather’s name on this bill. He stated, “We understand my grandfather’s legacy. This bill, as it stands, shouldn’t have his name.” He suggested a meeting with White to discuss the Ali Act, fighter protections, and the future of the sport. Walsh, who belongs to the Ali boxing lineage, is committed to preserving the family legacy in the ring.
The Original Ali Act
The initial Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act of 2000, co-sponsored by John McCain, aimed to counter unfair practices and establish a separation between promoters and managers. Current laws prevent promoters from having financial stakes in a boxer’s management, and vice versa. Walsh argues the new bill compromises these safeguards, possibly combining promoter, matchmaker, and ranking roles in one organization.
Legislative Journey and Opposition
This bipartisan Revival Act, co-sponsored by Representatives Brian Jack and Sharice Davids, has passed the House with support from both major parties and now awaits consideration by the Senate Commerce Committee.
Promoter Oscar De La Hoya also stands against the bill, claiming it undermines the foundations of the original Ali Act and may lead to monopolies in boxing. Despite his disapproval, Walsh acknowledges some elements of the original law might benefit from modernization, particularly around health benefits, but emphasizes these enhancements shouldn’t undermine fighters’ rights.
Raising Awareness
Walsh and others stress the importance of raising awareness among fighters and fans about the Ali Act’s role. Understanding these rights is crucial for fighters. He encourages his fellow fighters to educate themselves and voice their opinions on the matter.
