The enduring conflict in Ukraine has drawn numerous comparisons to World War I due to its relentless infantry battles and heavy loss of life. Initially, the notion that it could exceed the duration of such a devastating war seemed inconceivable. However, the war in Ukraine has now surpassed World War I’s length, lasting more than 1,569 days, which equates to over four years and three months.
When Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated the military invasion in February 2022, he anticipated a swift victory, expecting Ukraine to succumb within days. This prediction proved unfounded as Ukrainian forces resisted effectively, turning the conflict into a drawn-out war of attrition. Even among the combatants, many were unprepared for the prolonged duration.
A Ukrainian soldier, identified only by the call sign ‘France’ due to security concerns and his previous service in the French Foreign Legion, expressed his thoughts. “I thought maybe two or three years, and then politicians will find some kind of consensus,” he remarked.
Despite ongoing hostilities and a standstill in peace negotiations, there appears little indication of an imminent resolution. Polling data indicates nearly half of Ukrainians do not expect the war to conclude before the following year. If this proves accurate, the conflict will edge closer to matching World War II’s duration, which lasted six years.
Many Ukrainians contend the current conflict truly began in 2014 with Russia’s annexation of Crimea. Therefore, these hostilities are viewed as part of a longer, ongoing struggle.
