Palmetto State Democrats have selected Dr. Annie Andrews as their candidate to potentially challenge incumbent Senator Lindsey Graham in South Carolina. Andrews, a pediatrician, emerged victorious from a three-way primary contest. She is expected to face Graham, aiming for his fifth term in the November elections. South Carolina has not sent a Democrat to the Senate since the 1990s, with former Senator Fritz Hollings being the last Democratic representative.
Andrews, already known in local politics, is focused on defeating Graham but has also targeted Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. She vowed to impeach and remove Kennedy at a recent voter rally, although the Senate does not initiate impeachment processes, but acts as the final step.
In a previous op-ed for MS Now, Andrews criticized Kennedy for his role in the anti-vaccine movement, which she claims has lowered herd immunity against infections like measles. She argued that leadership and trust play critical roles in public health, and Kennedy’s influence has led to outbreaks in communities.
Graham faces competition in a six-way Republican primary, including businessman Mark Lynch. This primary is seen as a test of former President Donald Trump’s endorsement power. Lynch, endorsed by Trump’s former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent, aims to unseat Graham by rallying conservative support.
As South Carolina prepares for the upcoming election, this contest reflects broader national debates about leadership, public health, and political endorsements.
