The ongoing power struggle between Iran and Israel is significantly affecting Lebanon. This Middle Eastern country has become a focal point in the broader conflict, as both nations seek to advance their own agendas through Lebanese territory.
On a recent Sunday, hostilities flared up when Hezbollah, a Lebanese militia backed by Iran, launched an attack on Israel. This led to Israeli retaliation in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a known stronghold for Hezbollah. Iran responded with further strikes on northern Israel, upholding its earlier threats to respond more aggressively.
Experts suggest that both Israeli and Iranian leaders are determined to establish a firm stance through Beirut, intensifying tensions and heightening the risk of a full-scale war. Lina Khatib, an associate fellow at the Chatham House research institute in London, commented that Lebanon remains embroiled in the interests of both Iran and Israel, becoming a battleground where neither is willing to show flexibility.
Amid these tensions, President Trump aimed to bring an end to the conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran. Nevertheless, Iranian leadership demands any peace treaty also encompass Lebanon. On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejects this approach, opting to continue military actions specifically against Hezbollah.
Netanyahu accused Iran and Hezbollah of trying to enforce a new operational calculus by retaliating against Israel’s maneuvers in Beirut. He declared this dynamic intolerable and resisted any attempts to allow it to continue unchallenged.
