Fox News’ Kayleigh McEnany reports that President Donald Trump plans to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals in New York City. Trump, a longtime Knicks fan, received a personal invitation from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Silver expressed enthusiasm about the president’s attendance, noting their shared interests.
The report highlights President Trump’s frequent attendance at major sporting events during his presidency. It also mentions his intention to host a UFC fight at the White House on June 14. Alongside these commitments, Trump has recently commented on the MLB’s approach to a salary cap.
“If you don’t have a salary cap, you don’t have a sport,” Trump said.
In a conversation aboard Air Force One, OutKick’s Dan Zaksheske asked about the MLB’s current situation. Trump expressed firm support for adopting a salary cap, suggesting that without it, sports sustainability is compromised. He cited the NFL, NHL, and NBA as examples of leagues that successfully operate under salary caps. MLB remains the only major North American professional league without such a system.
Trump criticized baseball for not implementing a salary cap sooner. “I know so much about sports, they should’ve done it a long time ago,” he remarked. He connected his administration’s legislative efforts on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) with salary caps in professional leagues.
Currently, the MLB and MLBPA are in early collective bargaining discussions. A proposal for a $245.3 million salary cap in 2027 has surfaced. This season, the Los Angeles Dodgers had the highest payroll at $415.2 million, while the Miami Marlins had the lowest at $81.8 million.
