Minnesota Tops Study on Quality of Life Despite Nationwide Declines

Which state leads in ensuring the well-being of its residents with health, education, and hope? Contrary to expectations, it is not the wealthiest states like Connecticut, New York, or Washington, D.C. It’s also not the tech hub of California or the colorful state of Texas. Florida, popular among retirees, is not the leader either.

A recent comprehensive study names Minnesota as the state with the highest quality of life. Often perceived as calm and pragmatic, Minnesota stands out despite its reputation for cold weather.

This study, released on a Saturday, originates from the State of the Nation Project, supported by a bipartisan group of experts. The assessment draws on 31 measures and was developed by scholars and former advisers to the last five U.S. presidents, including Donald Trump.

While Minnesota excels compared to other states, the overall news is concerning. The study highlights a general decline in self-reported well-being and mental health across the country, including Minnesota. People are also showing reduced trust in institutions and each other, leading to widespread unhappiness.

“We have a national problem on our hands,” said Douglas N. Harris, a Tulane University economist. Harris, who leads the State of the Nation Project, noted that Minnesota follows the national decline in mental health and family issues, despite its leading position.
