Democratic Candidate Faces Scandal Ahead of Maine Primary

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is under scrutiny ahead of the Tuesday primary. Republican senators are criticizing Platner, while many Democrats are hesitant to comment publicly.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, expressed his disbelief at the support for Platner despite his controversial past. Cruz highlighted Platner’s communist self-description and a Nazi tattoo, urging that such issues should be beyond political support.

When Fox News Digital questioned Democratic senators on Platner’s support, Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., deflected by stating he doesn’t vote in Maine. Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, said the decision is up to Maine voters.

Many Democrats are avoiding the topic, with Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., admitting she hasn’t paid attention to the Maine race yet. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., also stated he had other priorities.

Platner’s campaign is clouded by allegations, including sexting scandals, mocking a wounded soldier, crude Reddit posts, and disturbing details from former partners. Reports from the New York Times cite ex-girlfriends describing Platner’s misogyny and awareness of his tattoo’s Nazi symbol resemblance.

Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., hopes Maine voters act wisely on Tuesday, expressing that Platner’s actions are indefensible. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., lamented the lack of true Democratic representation in the race.

Despite these controversies, Platner remains a frontrunner in the primary. Prominent Democrats like Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., continue to support Platner, eyeing the opportunity to flip Maine’s Senate seat.

Platner would face incumbent Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in November’s midterms if he wins. Sen. Hagerty doubts Mainers want Platner as their representative, especially with Collins as an option.

Republican senators express embarrassment at Platner’s candidacy, anticipating his defeat against Collins.
