NBA Enforces Lifetime Bans Following On-Court Incident During Finals

The NBA announced lifetime bans for two individuals following an incident during Game 1 of the NBA Finals. One person was arrested after running onto the court during the fourth quarter of the game between the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks. The person appeared to take a selfie near San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama. The NBA did not reveal the role of the second banned individual who did not enter the court.

“The individual who entered the court area during Game 1 of The Finals was arrested and will be banned for life from all NBA arenas,” stated an NBA spokesperson. “A second individual will also receive a lifetime ban for his role in the incident.” The arrested individual is reportedly a juvenile.

The startled fan approached from the sideline opposite the team benches, heading into San Antonio’s offensive end. Swiftly, security guards intervened, removing the person without any physical contact occurring with Wembanyama or the New York players.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver commented on the matter, expressing skepticism over describing the individual as a fan. Wembanyama mentioned feeling unbothered and uncertain of how to react during the occurrence, drawing a parallel to a previous incident involving a bat in January 2024. The game paused briefly for 1 minute and 29 seconds before resuming with a jump ball.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson downplayed the significance of the situation, praising security for their prompt action and expressing satisfaction with how the game continued without major disruptions.

Commissioner Silver commended officiating crew chief Scott Foster and the crew for their quick response, ensuring the game was minimally affected. Silver remarked on the substantial security now present in sports, allowing venues to address such incidents promptly.

Separately, the league is investigating remarks made to New York guard Jalen Brunson during the final minute of the game. Brunson, who led the Knicks with 30 points, appeared affected by the comments. His teammate Josh Hart did not directly witness the incident but noted Brunson’s usual composure.

The NBA has prioritized fan behavior, and emphasized consistent enforcement of the NBA Fan Code of Conduct since the start of the season. A league memorandum stressed the need for arena staff to identify and address misconduct proactively. Video materials outlining the code are shown to fans before games.

“It is critical that teams and arenas vigorously enforce the Code of Conduct and not tolerate any misconduct that impacts our players, fans, or otherwise disrupts the game,” stated the NBA.
