California Primary Election Ballot Counting Progress

California Primary Election: Ballot Counting Continues

The California primary election has a significant number of ballots still awaiting processing. As of Thursday evening, about 3.6 million ballots remain uncounted. The Secretary of State has reported this figure, emphasizing the large number of outstanding vote-by-mail ballots. These ballots have the potential to alter the outcomes of several closely contested races.

Current Ballot Count

Approximately 5.6 million ballots have been processed. In Los Angeles County alone, election officials have counted around 1.4 million ballots, leaving about 700,000 pending.

We allow people lots of different avenues to vote, and as a result, it takes longer to count up all the votes. And that’s how it should be… It’s an argument in favor of making sure the process runs correctly — not quickly. — Jessica Levinson, Loyola Marymount University

According to the Secretary of State, vote-by-mail ballots postmarked by election day will be counted if received by the county elections official within seven days after the election. These updates will continue daily until the vote count is finalized.

Gubernatorial and Mayoral Races

In the gubernatorial race, Republican Steve Hilton currently leads with 27% of the vote. Democrats Xavier Becerra and Tom Steyer follow with 26% and 20%, respectively. Los Angeles County, a major voting area, will release more results soon with an estimated 688,000 votes still pending.

In the Los Angeles mayoral race, incumbent Karen Bass has secured a spot on the November ballot. However, the challenger remains undecided. With 62% of the votes counted, Spencer Pratt is in second place, closely followed by City Councilmember Nithya Raman.

Orange County Congressional Races

A clearer picture is emerging for the upcoming November elections in Orange County’s congressional races. Updated reports will continue as more ballots are processed.

Voter Reactions and Challenges

In the wake of election night, candidates and voters have shown varied responses. Republican candidate Steve Hilton has continued to express concerns about the election process without presenting evidence. Karen Bass, on the other hand, prepares for a strong campaign heading into the November elections.

Spencer Pratt’s statements about relocating the homeless population have stirred discussions with Seattle’s leadership, marking a controversial stand during the campaign.

Future Implications

The voting process in California, characterized by its extended counting period due to vote-by-mail preferences, underscores the importance of accuracy over speed. Jessica Levinson highlights that the system allows greater voter participation.

With a large proportion of ballots still uncounted, the final results could reflect significant changes in close races, as seen in both gubernatorial and mayoral contests. Democratic candidate Rob Bonta is projected to advance in the attorney general race, further solidifying ongoing shifts within the state’s political landscape.
