A United Airlines pilot, who was landing at Newark Liberty International Airport, reported hearing a ‘thump’ just before the plane touched down. This turned out to be the moment the plane clipped a light pole, which subsequently fell onto a truck, injuring the driver, according to a newly released report.
The report from the National Transportation Safety Board detailed that the co-pilot had cautioned the pilot about being ‘slow and a little low’ during their descent over the New Jersey Turnpike. This incident occurred on a gusty Sunday as the Boeing 767, carrying 220 passengers from Venice, neared the airport. The plane had altered its approach to land into the wind on a runway positioned just west of the turnpike.
The light pole, which was 15 feet tall, stood along the southbound side of the turnpike and was hit by the plane. Fortunately, none of the passengers or 11 crew members were injured. However, the plane sustained significant damage, including three punctures in its fuselage, one nearly four feet long, and slash marks on a landing gear tire.
The truck, transporting bread and rolls, suffered large holes in its windshield and a ‘major puncture’ in the trailer. The report noted that there was no evidence of tire marks on either the cab or trailer.
The truck driver, Warren Boardley, was hospitalized with minor injuries but has since been released. Northeast Foods, Boardley’s employer located in Baltimore, did not provide any comments. Similarly, J. Wyndal Gordon, a lawyer representing Boardley, did not respond to requests for comment.
