Recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulted in at least nine Palestinian fatalities overnight, as reported by local hospitals. Despite global attention primarily focusing on the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, the tension within Gaza remains severe.
According to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, the strikes led to the deaths of nine individuals, including two women and two children. These casualties were the result of four separate strikes in the area. Footage from one strike revealed extensive damage to a residential apartment building, creating a massive hole on an upper floor and scattering blood-stained belongings into the street.
During a funeral on Thursday in Gaza City, Palestinians gathered to mourn their relatives. Walid Shbeir, the uncle of one of the deceased, expressed the ongoing distress: “They say the war has stopped, but the war has not stopped. Every night there is killing, and we have martyrs.” His words reflect the persistent nature of the violence despite claims of a ceasefire.

The Israeli military has not yet commented on the strikes. Earlier, Israel targeted and killed the top Hamas military leader, following previous attacks that eliminated his predecessor. This marks a continuous cycle of violence since the attempted ceasefire in October designed to curb over two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Despite the reduction in heavy fighting, the ceasefire remains unstable, with almost daily incidents of Israeli fire. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports more than 936 deaths since the ceasefire was enacted. This Ministry holds credibility among United Nations agencies and independent experts, although it does not differentiate between civilian and militant casualties.
Militant groups have engaged in attacks against Israeli troops, prompting responses from Israel. These include claims of truce violations or threats to Israeli personnel. Israel maintains its military actions are retaliatory in nature, attributing them to breaches in the ceasefire agreement. Since the ceasefire, four Israeli soldiers have also died in the region.
Israel’s current operational stance in Gaza is a reaction to Hamas’ offensive in October 2023. This attack resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and 251 hostages.
