New exhibitions and reopenings bring a vibrant and patriotic mood to the area surrounding the National Mall. Recent efforts are part of the preparation for celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Among the highlights is “American Aspirations,” an exhibit displaying the mahogany desk used by Thomas Jefferson to draft the Declaration. This is one of the Smithsonian’s prized artifacts.
In the months leading up to this milestone, cultural institutions have been busy preparing. Since spring, major American-themed exhibitions have premiered, including shows at Glenstone and the National Gallery of Art, alongside Revolutionary War-themed activities at Mount Vernon. These celebrations, set to continue through 2026, reflect a period filled with events designed to maximize patriotic engagement.
Between Memorial Day and July 4, the area hosts various events aimed at celebrating America’s foundation. Attendees can experience the grandeur of tall ships parades, lively downtown block parties, and the rare opportunity to see revered national relics collected under one roof. These events serve as a collective tribute to the American Experiment.
