Bruce Pearl is known for his strong opinions, both on and off the basketball court. The former Auburn University men’s basketball coach has leveraged his reputation to speak out against antisemitism and in support of Israel.
“Some might think it’s political, but it’s about survival. Jewish people face dwindling places where they are welcome,” said Pearl, the Chair of the U.S. Israel Education Association, to Fox News Digital. Pearl’s Jewish heritage makes this an important issue for him, rooted in family teachings about America as a refuge for persecuted Jews.
This is the greatest country in the world. And I’m an incredible patriot. My grandfather made sure I knew that America saved our family’s life. I’m grateful.
Acknowledging the persistence of antisemitism and racism in the U.S., Pearl believes these are challenges, not barriers. “Antisemitism, racism—these are obstacles, not roadblocks,” asserts Pearl, whose coaching often involves African American athletes. “We’ve navigated these challenges.”
Following the October 2023 Hamas attacks in Israel, Pearl became a leading pro-Israel voice in sports. While some criticize athletes and coaches for publicly addressing political issues, Pearl embraces open discussions on politics and religion.
“We have freedom of speech and thought, and I value respectful conversations about differing views,” Pearl stated, reinforcing his role as an educator and mentor.
Pearl recently received the Champion of Israel award from the Manhattan Jewish Experience (MJE) for his advocacy. MJE engages young Jewish professionals through educational programs focusing on identity, culture, and faith.
Rabbi Mark Wildes, MJE’s founder, emphasizes the importance of knowledge in advocating for Jewish identity. “An educated Jew is a proud Jew. MJE is all about this,” Wildes told Fox News Digital.
MJE seeks to address anti-Israel demonstrations in New York City, which, according to Wildes, aim to intimidate Jewish communities. “These protests try to deter Jews from practicing their faith,” he noted.
Despite societal divisions, Pearl trusts in sports’ ability to bring people together. He personally experienced the unifying nature of sports, which helped him find belonging and acceptance.
I believe sports unify us. On the playground, when teams are picked, factors like race or religion don’t matter. The focus is on teamwork and winning together.
Pearl values the life lessons he learned through family and sports. He hopes future generations will enjoy the same opportunities. “I want my grandchildren to have the same chance I’ve had,” Pearl concluded.
