Graham Platner, expected to become the Democratic nominee for the Maine Senate, recently journeyed to Washington. His visit came amid rising scrutiny over his past actions. Mr. Platner, an oyster farmer contesting against five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins, extended an invitation to the entire Senate Democratic caucus for a meeting. However, only a handful of senators attended.
Prior to the meeting, Mr. Platner engaged in a brief private meeting with Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, who holds the position of minority leader. Two individuals aware of the meeting shared this information. Earlier, Mr. Schumer had supported Mr. Platner’s primary rival, before she withdrew her campaign a month back.
While addressing reporters at the Capitol, Mr. Schumer sidestepped questions about Mr. Platner, following reports that emerged last weekend. These reports suggested that Mr. Platner sent inappropriate messages to women outside his marriage. Such revelations have fueled concerns among Democrats regarding the potential political liabilities Mr. Platner carries.
“I met with Graham Platner today,” Mr. Schumer stated. “We’re going to beat Susan Collins and take back the Senate.”
Despite repeated inquiries from journalists about his faith in Mr. Platner, Mr. Schumer reiterated three times the resolve of Democrats to unseat Ms. Collins, also noting his endorsement of Mr. Platner, before ending the press session.
