Britain Bars Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker From Entering

Britain has prevented Cenk Uygur, a left-wing Turkish-American media personality, and his nephew, Hasan Piker, from entering the country to attend scheduled speaking events. Both individuals have identified their views on Israel as the reason for this restriction.

Uygur co-hosts the popular YouTube channel “The Young Turks”, which garners significant viewership. Piker is recognized as a U.S. left-wing commentator and influencer. They were set to speak at upcoming events including the SXSW London festival and the University of Oxford.

The British interior ministry announced that the travel authorization for these individuals was revoked, as their presence might not serve the public good. The statement did not explicitly reference Israel.

I’ve been banned for criticizing Israel. Are we free anymore?

Uygur expressed this sentiment after an attempt to board a flight. Piker shared a similar frustration, stating, The UK has revoked my visa as well. All at the behest of Israel.

Piker was scheduled to speak at SXSW about “How the American Left Learned to Speak the Internet,” while Uygur’s discussion was titled “Techno-Feudalism is Here. Who Are the Lords?” Neither of their event sections on the SXSW London website mentioned Israel. SXSW London promotes itself as a festival of “business, technology and creativity.”

Uygur and Piker’s travel ban comes amid concerns voiced by U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance regarding perceived threats to free speech in Britain. In a related incident, the British government recently denied entry to 11 individuals described as “foreign far-right agitators.” These individuals intended to participate in an event organized by anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson.

Uygur, aged 56, boasts more than 200 million monthly views on “The Young Turks,” as noted on the SXSW London website. He was briefly involved as a Democratic nominee during the 2024 U.S. presidential race. Meanwhile, his 34-year-old nephew Piker engages a daily audience of 30,000 people on Twitch, further emphasized by the SXSW website.
