Frank Foster, at the age of 93, continues to actively referee soccer matches, wielding red and yellow cards with vigor. According to SWNS, Foster has overseen approximately 5,500 matches in a career spanning 46 years. He attributes his extended career and fitness to lifelong healthy habits and a fundamental diet.
Foster recalls that wartime rations in his youth played a significant role in shaping his dietary habits. This period ensured he consumed “healthy food” rather than sugary treats.
He remarked, “I grew up eating healthy food instead of sweets and cakes.”
His game-day routine still revolves around nutritious meals. He starts with a morning bowl of oatmeal or cereal, or sometimes marmalade on toast. This fuels him for the 90-minute matches he officiates, covering men’s, women’s, and children’s games.
Foster’s journey as a referee began in 1980, and he remains a commanding presence on the field. A military veteran, he excelled in his referee exam with a 98% score. His approach relies on traditional discipline to maintain control during games.
He expresses concern over modern referees being too lenient, allowing players’ antics to disrupt the sport. Foster emphasizes setting strict rules before the match to avoid such behavior. He disapproves of exaggerations like theatrical diving, stating, “Those who go down like they have been shot, well I would just book them.”
Foster also dislikes the stress created by video reviews for minor offside calls, considering them unnecessary. “Sometimes it’s only the player’s toe which is offside. It is ridiculous,” he remarks.
Maintaining professional standards, Foster ensures his referee kit and Adidas boots remain clean and impeccable for each match.
Despite his age, Foster enjoys his role as a referee and shows no signs of retiring soon.
