16 Children Rescued from Dire Conditions in Ohio

Authorities have arrested four individuals following the discovery of 16 children living under dire circumstances in a rural home in Hamden, Ohio. This location is situated 60 miles southeast of Columbus. State Attorney General Andy Wilson shared these developments at a recent news conference.

“These are conditions unimaginable for anyone to live in, especially children,” Wilson reported.

The alarming conditions prompted emergency intervention. Gary L. Siders Sr. and Gary L. Siders Jr. appeared via Zoom during the court proceedings at Vinton County Court of Common Pleas. Four adults now face 16 charges of child endangerment each due to these appalling conditions found on Tuesday.

The children were removed from their living situation. Wilson expressed great concern, labeling it as the worst case he has seen, stating that the situation represented “pure evil.” Some children were in severe conditions, with two requiring air transport to Level 1 trauma centers for their injuries.

“A delay of even 24 hours could have resulted in fatalities,” Wilson commented.

Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain described the living conditions as horrid, specifying the abundance of feces and bacteria.

“Livestock received better care,” Cain noted.

The accused, named as Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders, have been charged with 16 counts of second-degree child endangerment. During a court session, they entered not guilty pleas with bonds set at $300,000 each.

Authorities did not confirm any familial connections among the children but indicated that their ages ranged from 18 months to 18 years.

“Justice will reach these children,” Wilson declared.

Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer emphasized that these suspects are not native to Vinton County. He assured that this was an internal family matter, not involving human trafficking, meaning other children in the community were not at risk.

A cat was spotted on a porch of the home located on Ohmer Street in Hamden, illustrating the state where authorities uncovered 16 children living in harsh conditions.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has been updated on the situation. “The conditions these children endured are heartbreaking,” he said. “Attorney General Wilson, an experienced prosecutor, explained he had never witnessed such brutality before. Fran and I extend our prayers for these children and commend the dedication of children’s services workers, law enforcement, and medical personnel involved.”
