Homeland Security Proposal Could Disrupt International Travel

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has proposed removing customs officers from airports in major cities like Boston, New York, and Los Angeles, a move attracting criticism from travel industry and business leaders. The plan, meant to penalize sanctuary cities limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities, could prevent these airports from accepting international flights.

Customs officers are essential for monitoring goods and processing incoming international flights. Their absence could lead to disruptions in air transportation at these critical entry ports. A coalition of travel and business trade groups, including the U.S. Travel Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, issued a statement warning that reduced Customs and Border Protection operations would lead to nationwide chaos and negatively impact the travel economy.

Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy expressed concern over the proposal, advising against shutting down air travel opportunities based on political disagreements. He highlighted the importance of maintaining accessibility for travelers from around the world, emphasizing that international flights should be welcomed at all airports regardless of political affiliations.
