A United Airlines flight en route to Minneapolis from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport made an emergency landing in Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday night. The diversion was due to a passenger who allegedly attempted to enter the cockpit.
United Airlines issued a statement confirming the situation, stating, “The flight landed safely in Madison, Wisconsin to address a security concern with an unruly passenger.” The flight touched down at Dane County Regional Airport about 90 minutes after it departed from Chicago.
While specific details of the security concern weren’t disclosed, audio from air traffic control at Dane County Regional Airport suggests that the passenger made several attempts to breach the cockpit. According to a crew member on the air traffic control audio, the passenger was eventually controlled and seated, surrounded by law enforcement officers.
“I do not believe they ever cuffed him, but they were able to get control of him after multiple attempts to try to breach the cockpit,”a crew member said over the air traffic control audio.
Scanner audio from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office revealed more context, noting that five off-duty law enforcement officers were on the flight and had detained the individual. The unwelcome passenger was removed from the aircraft around 10:30 p.m. local time.
An official statement from the FBI Milwaukee’s Madison Resident Agency noted that the FBI and local law enforcement responded immediately once notified. The passengers were able to resume their journey after the incident was resolved.
Fox News Digital reached out to multiple agencies, including the Madison Police Department, Dane County Sheriff’s Office, TSA, and the FBI, for further details on the incident.
