United Airlines Flight Diverted Due to Unruly Passenger

A United Airlines flight headed to Minneapolis from Chicago was unexpectedly diverted to Wisconsin on Friday evening to handle a security issue involving a disruptive passenger, according to officials.

The flight safely landed in Madison, Wisconsin, to address the situation with an unruly passenger, an airline spokesperson stated in an email. Law enforcement officials on board restrained the passenger promptly, said Carrie Springer, spokeswoman for the Dane County Regional Airport.

Deputies from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office met the plane upon landing and removed the individual. Federal authorities are now in charge of the investigation, Springer added. Audio reviewed by The Associated Press revealed that, before landing, an aircraft crew member informed controllers that law enforcement officers were able to subdue the passenger after some time.

The Boeing 737 was carrying 147 passengers and six crew members. No injuries were reported, the airline confirmed. Mike Rundle, a passenger, described the unruly individual as a man in his 70s who seemed confused. He reported that other passengers also noticed his confusion.

According to Rundle, the man stood while the plane was on the runway in Chicago. Flight attendants instructed him to sit and requested over the intercom if anyone spoke Russian. Later, Rundle noted a commotion when a group of men guided the passenger back to his seat. I didn’t see everything clearly, but the person next to me mentioned seeing the man ‘reach’ for a flight attendant, Rundle explained. It took a few people to restrain him.

After being handcuffed, the man was quietly seated for the remainder of the flight and was removed from the aircraft in Madison. The overall mood was calm, and the flight crew managed the situation well, Rundle reported. The flight resumed and reached its destination in Minneapolis early Saturday morning.
