Lincoln-Way West Triumphs in Regional Championship

Jackson Mansker of Lincoln-Way West experienced an incredible moment during the Class 4A Homewood-Flossmoor Regional championship game. In an unexpected turn, Mansker was denied a home run after an outstanding catch by Marcos Morales, the junior center fielder from the opposite team. Showing frustration, Mansker hit the bench with his right hand, resulting in three bloody knuckles.

Mansker expressed his frustration about consistently experiencing ‘wall balls’ with a calculated response. In his next at-bat, he channeled his energy into a powerful two-run homer in the fifth inning. This contribution helped the Warriors decisively defeat the host Vikings 6-2.

Lincoln-Way West, with a record of 26-9, achieved their sixth regional title, marking their fourth victory within the past five years. Carson Paulas supported the team’s efforts by adding two hits and two RBIs. Owen Chudzinski also emerged victorious as the winning pitcher, managing three scoreless innings during relief.

“I’ve been getting wall balls all season,” Mansker commented, referring to the ten times this had happened. “I was just frustrated. I never really get mad that easily.”

Senior catcher Owen Weber played a crucial role by making a rally-stopping defensive move when the bases were loaded during the fourth inning. With the score tied at 2-2, he intercepted a pitch, then threw quickly to Mansker at third base for a decisive pickoff.

Weber stated, “I needed to block the ball and keep it in front of me. But I saw that the runner was off the base and I needed to take advantage of it.”

Jalen Webb led the seventh-seeded host Homewood-Flossmoor team, obtaining two hits. Morales impressed with his leaping catch, denying Mansker of a home run in the third inning. Mansker acknowledged the feat: “I thought it was gone — I thought he had no chance. Props to him for making a really good catch.”

Throughout the game, Mansker’s four appearances at the plate proved intriguing. His initial hit resulted in a double off the center wall. After being robbed of a homer, he succeeded with a pivotal homer in the fifth inning. The Vikings chose to walk him intentionally during the sixth inning due to his formidable presence.

Despite being known for his football skills, Mansker adjusted his batting stance before the game by taking advice from assistant coach Jeff Struebing. Instead of hitting flat-footed, he elevated his left heel. Mansker noticed improvement with this change, declaring, “But when I did it Saturday, it started to work.”

Coach Struebing believes Mansker’s athletic abilities transfer well into baseball: “He’s as athletic as anyone in the state but his swing wasn’t athletic.” By modifying his approach, Struebing aimed to leverage Mansker’s strengths.
“We loosened him up a little bit with a nice little toe tap,” he explained. “It frees up his swing. He’s so strong, and the dude can hit.”

Batting lead-off, Carson Paulas values Mansker’s position in the team. He clarified, “I know if I get on base, he will send one through the hole and I’ll be running home.” Paired within the lineup and as friends outside the sport, Paulas appreciates Mansker’s contributions.
