Matt Ryan’s New Role with Atlanta Falcons: Boosting the Team’s Future

Matt Ryan, the new president of football for the Atlanta Falcons, is actively working to improve the team. Positioned above the new general manager, Ian Cunningham, Ryan is taking part in the team’s off-season training activities (OTAs). According to Marc Raimondi of ESPN, Ryan, the former Falcons quarterback, is assisting the offense during these sessions by providing an additional arm to throw passes to the receivers.

Jahan Dotson, a wide receiver who joined the Falcons through free agency, expressed surprise and excitement about catching passes from Ryan during practices. “I honestly had no idea [he’d be doing that],” Dotson shared. “Getting to see the legend of Atlanta participating on the field is pretty cool. He’s a great guy, and it’s nice to learn from him.”

Currently, the Falcons have four quarterbacks on their 90-man roster: Michael Penix Jr., Tua Tagovailoa, Trevor Siemian, and Jack Strand. Penix and Tagovailoa are set for a competitive battle during the upcoming training camp. Penix, a first-round pick in 2024, is on his way back from an ACL injury. Although not yet cleared for full team drills, he is participating in 7-on-7 exercises.

Ryan’s presence is expected to enhance this quarterback competition. New head coach Kevin Stefanski values Ryan’s contribution, stating, “He helps me every day, as well as our players. Given his unique history with both the city and the team, he offers a perspective that few others can provide.” Stefanski appreciates Ryan’s ability to connect with the players, having once been in the same position.

The Falcons narrowly missed the playoffs last season with an 8-9 record, tying with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but falling short of the NFC South-winning Carolina Panthers. The division appears to be competitive again this year. Ryan might not be playing on the field to lead the Falcons to the postseason, but he is using his expertise to strengthen the team during the offseason.
