Lemont’s Tilly Shines as Emergency Goalkeeper, Leading Team to Sectional Victory

Allison Tilly’s readiness to step into a challenging role turned into an unforgettable week for Lemont. Facing a shortage of goalkeepers due to injuries, Lemont needed someone to fill the position. Tilly, usually a defender, took the challenge head-on. Despite never having played in goal, her diverse sports background in basketball, volleyball, and softball gave her confidence. ‘I figured if no one else would do it, I’d try,’ Tilly said.

Her first practice as a goalkeeper occurred on Monday. By Friday, she played a crucial role in securing a 2-1 victory over the host Celtics at the Class 2A Providence Sectional championship in New Lenox.

Tilly’s efforts saw Lemont secure its first sectional title since 2018. Illinois-Chicago recruit Gabriela Kuruc, who scored both goals, praised Tilly’s performance. Lemont will now face Geneva in the upcoming Kankakee Supersectional.

As longtime coach Rick Prangen is retiring, Tilly expressed a desire to make this season memorable. The team’s determination was evident throughout the game, filled with fast-paced action.

‘We knew it was going to be fast-paced,’ Kuruc said. ‘Our recent training prepared us well.’

Despite nerves, Tilly managed multiple crucial saves, especially during the nail-biting final moments. ‘It was scary,’ she admitted. Yet, her coach, Rick Prangen, commended her remarkable performance.

Tilly revealed she absorbed plenty of guidance from coaches, helping her act decisively during the game. Kuruc expressed gratitude to Tilly for stepping up from field play to goalkeeping, calling it impressive.

After the match, the coaching staff celebrated Tilly’s efforts, with coach Mark Tomczak enthusiastically congratulating her on the field. Tilly described the experience as ‘surreal’ and felt proud of helping her team reach this milestone.
