Journey is on their Final Frontier Tour, set to conclude in November. Jonathan Cain, the band’s keyboardist, shared his thoughts on retirement in a recent Rock & Roll High School podcast interview. Cain said the motivation behind his long tenure in music is the fans.
“I think the only reason I’m still out here is the fans,” said Cain. “It’s time for me to close the chapter. It’s a beautiful time to say goodbye, for me.”
Cain reflected on Journey’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2017. During the event, former singer Steve Perry accepted the award with the band but didn’t perform. Cain was surprised, believing Perry would join them on stage.
I was certain — I would have bet money he would’ve changed his mind and come and sang ‘Lights’ with us or something, but he didn’t, which was weird,” said Cain. “I would have bet money that he was gonna come to soundcheck the day before and show up. I kept looking in the wings and he never came.
Cain’s comments suggest that a reunion with Perry remains unlikely. However, he emphasized that Perry is “welcome on our stage any time.” Cain had previously hinted that Perry might join the tour, likely expressing hope rather than certainty.
Journey, a legendary rock band, prepares to end their touring era. Despite unresolved issues with Perry, they’ve had a longstanding career and are ready to move forward.
