Lake Central senior first baseman Tyler Thuftedal is excelling at the plate as the season progresses. Thuftedal has seen a turnaround in his performance. ‘I didn’t get off the start I wanted,’ he admitted. ‘But these last few games, I’ve been feeling like myself. I’m more confident than I’ve been. I’ve contributed more than before.’
Thuftedal’s impact was clear during a Class 4A Crown Point Sectional first-round playoff game against Munster. In his playoff debut, the Calumet College recruit went 2-for-2 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run, leading the Indians to a 13-3 victory in five innings. He was intentionally walked with runners on base in the fifth inning, a new experience for him. ‘I was surprised,’ he said. ‘Especially given this year’s challenges. But I’ve found my rhythm.’
Lake Central’s Tyler Thuftedal took a lead at first base during the game.
Sophomore designated hitter Jacob Forystek added to the team’s success by going 3-for-4 with an RBI, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. The team, holding a 22-8 record, is set to face Morton (7-13) in the sectional semifinal. Batting seventh, Thuftedal improved his average to .215, arriving with three doubles this season.
Coach Mike Swartzentruber commented on Thuftedal’s progression. ‘He’s an intriguing player. A senior who struggled until recently,’ he said. ‘I introduced a sophomore to the team, and Thuftedal responded well. As soon as we began alternating, he started hitting. He was pivotal on Wednesday, delivering key hits. Recognizing his form at the season’s end was crucial.’
Last season ended with challenges for Thuftedal. He went 2-for-7 and pitched over ten innings before missing the final month due to a back issue. This season saw him share duties with Hunter Segal, which lit a spark. ‘I wanted to play every day,’ he said. ‘I became more aggressive and went to the plate ready to swing without hesitation.’
Junior catcher Brayden Walls saw the change. ‘He’s been coming alive. His bat’s woken up, and it’s great to see.’
Lake Central’s Brayden Walls celebrated a home run during the game against Munster.
Munster, with a 23-7 record and tied for No. 5 in the state poll with Valparaiso, initially took the lead with three runs in the first inning. Lake Central responded with five runs in the third, featuring a decisive two-run single from Connor Friesema and Thuftedal’s RBI double.
The Indians exploded for an additional eight runs in the fifth inning. This inning included 12 batters, highlighted by Walls’ three-run homer. ‘We assembled solid at-bats, which got us on the board,’ Swartzentruber noted. ‘After that, we relaxed and kept the momentum rolling.’
Sophomore pitcher Owen Kopercinski steadied himself after a hectic first inning, retiring ten straight batters. Despite walking a batter in the fifth, he finished strong with a strikeout. He previously allowed one run in six innings during a previous match against Munster.
‘For this game, I thought he was best suited,’ Swartzentruber stated. ‘Even as a sophomore, he had the right mentality. The occasion was not overwhelming.’
The team is now 14-2 since that earlier game. Despite the challenges, Thuftedal cherished this win. ‘This was electric. The most fun game of the season. I loved being part of it.’
