Cuban authorities have rallied around Raúl Castro, the nation’s former president, following his indictment on murder charges related to the downing of two civilian planes 30 years ago.

Raúl Castro, celebrated as a revolutionary hero, was officially charged in Miami, with Cuban state-run media quickly responding. Social media platforms were flooded with supportive messages, showcasing Castro’s long-standing image as a revered leader. Images of him as a young soldier, interacting with the public, and collaborating with his brother, Fidel Castro, were widely shared. The messages highlighted his honor and integrity throughout his life.

In a video posted online, Cuba’s current president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, expressed his loyalty, stating, “He’s like a father to me.” This depiction aims to uphold the nation’s unity and resilience.

The charges stem from a 1996 incident where two civilian aircraft were shot down over international waters near Cuba. As Castro approaches his 95th birthday, these legal allegations represent a significant challenge in his long career.

Although no longer holding official positions as head of state or military leader, Castro continues to be a significant figure in Cuba, wielding influence in its governance.
