Gary Sinise, an actor with decades of Hollywood experience, recently discussed his decision to leave California and the acting world. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Sinise, known for roles like Lt. Dan in “Forrest Gump,” shared his past struggles and family challenges that influenced this move.

Family Challenges and Decision to Leave

Sinise’s son, Mac, battled a rare cancer starting in 2018. Sinise became his son’s “battle buddy,” focusing on family needs during this difficult time. Additionally, his father suffered a stroke and died in 2021, and his mother required care. These circumstances led Sinise to reconsider his priorities.

“I stepped away from acting to focus on family. You’ll never regret doing that,” Sinise stated.

Weighing Options and Moving to Nashville

Sinise explained that high costs in California, including gas prices and property taxes, prompted him to consider a new location. He relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where living expenses are more manageable and he could plan for his family’s financial future.

“I like saving a bit more money. If I was still in California, that money would be moving a lot faster out the door,” Sinise remarked.

Gary Sinise Foundation and Legacy

Sinise founded the Gary Sinise Foundation in 2011, aiming to support military members and first responders. The foundation integrates individuals into programs providing long-term assistance.

“Once folks come into our program at the Gary Sinise Foundation, they’re part of our family,” Sinise emphasized.

Preserving a Personal Legacy

Aside from his foundation’s work, Sinise focuses on preserving his son Mac’s musical legacy. He collaborated with others to complete Mac’s unfinished music projects, releasing posthumous albums. Proceeds from these albums support the foundation.

“It’s emotional because I miss him so much,” Sinise said about the music, which benefits military families as per Mac’s wishes.
