A political rally in Katy, Texas, for Attorney General Ken Paxton drew a large crowd at a local barbeque restaurant. Voters gathered to show their support, including Ricardo Vidaurre and his wife, who spoke positively about Paxton, stating, “He’s not your typical politician. He has guts.” This comes after former President Trump endorsed Paxton as the GOP nominee for the U.S. Senate, challenging incumbent Sen. John Cornyn.

Senator Cornyn’s campaign, facing significant challenges, sees this political battle as an opportunity for Democrats, possibly affecting the Senate majority. At the event in Katy, it felt like an anticipatory victory moment for Paxton, with some suggesting voting for Cornyn was akin to supporting Democrats.

The primary race has been costly, with the Republican party spending heavily. Both candidates, Cornyn and Paxton, argue they are best suited to lead a post-Trump GOP. Cornyn highlights his voting alignment with Trump, while Paxton cites his legal battles against Democratic policies in Washington.

Despite Paxton’s legal controversies, including indictments and an impeachment, his supporters view these challenges as proof of his resilience. Cornyn, on the other hand, emphasizes a split within the Texas Republican base.

Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor, notes that the GOP primary illustrates a broader ideological rift within the party. The MAGA faction’s growth and Trump’s influence have intensified these divides, leading to one of the most contentious primaries in recent Texas history.

Depending on the primary outcome, the direction of the Texas GOP could shift. A Cornyn victory would maintain traditional conservative lines, while a Paxton win would elevate the MAGA populist faction.

Senator Cornyn asserts that a failure to nominate him might give Democrats a chance to gain a key Senate seat, potentially costing the GOP resources necessary for other crucial races across states like Michigan, Georgia, and North Carolina.

Democratic strategist Chuck Rocha notes a potential opportunity for Democrats due to Republican discord. Historical attempts by Democrats to gain ground in Texas, like those by Beto O’Rourke and MJ Hegar, have previously fallen short, but Rocha suggests the economic stresses and intraparty conflicts within the GOP could shift voter sentiments.

Latino voters, who previously supported Trump, are reportedly reconsidering Democratic options due to concerns over economic policies. A Democratic win in Texas might pave the way for reclaiming Senate control in the upcoming elections.
