Rep. Thomas Massie, who lost the Republican primary in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District to Ed Gallrein, backed by President Donald Trump, is not ruling out future political endeavors. He mentioned planning for potential future campaigns.
In a recent message on X, Massie stated, “I filed with FEC for the 2028 House race. This allows me to raise funds to continue my political operations supporting my position as a current office holder and as a potential candidate for federal office.” He added that he has not yet decided on a specific office to pursue.
Rep. Thomas Massie expressed his continued political ambitions after conceding the primary on May 19, 2026, in Hebron, Kentucky.
Speaking at a College Republicans event at the University of Louisville on April 6, Massie remarked, “If I lose on May 19, I am not doing any more government ever.” Despite his initial stance, his statement to Fox News Digital suggests he remains open to possibilities. He said, “I’m keeping every option open, and there’s still an undisclosed paid social media campaign to rewrite history.”
Massie’s defeat came at the hands of Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL, who triumphed in the primary election. Massie has been in Congress since late 2012.
Refuting any speculation of election irregularities, Massie clarified, “There’s a quiet all-out war for the future of our country. Let us not misdirect our precious resources. I do not believe I lost due to fraudulent votes, mail-in ballots, hacking, or mistabulated results.” Despite calls from some quarters for a recount, he stands by the election results.
On “Meet the Press,” moderator Kristen Welker queried Massie about a potential 2028 presidential bid. Massie responded, “I will not rule out anything. And right now I’m not gonna rule in anything.” He indicated he plans to remain engaged in political discourse, possibly from an external position. “I’ve been exposing what’s going on in Washington D.C. for years,” Massie said, promising to continue his efforts in some capacity.
Ed Gallrein hailed his win as a significant achievement, likening it to a “David vs. Goliath” victory in defeating Rep. Massie.
