The City of Highland Park commemorated Memorial Day with a ceremony held in Highland Park High School’s auditorium. The space, adorned with motivational words “Dream…Believe…Achieve…,” served as a backdrop for the heartfelt observance.
The event started at 11 a.m. on May 25, featuring speeches, musical performances, and a poignant bell ceremony conducted by the Jewish War Veterans Post 29. After the ceremony, attendees enjoyed a barbecue luncheon outdoors in the school’s courtyard beneath a warm sun.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate a great community and a wonderful country,” remarked Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering.
The ceremony paid tribute to local veterans with speeches, performances by the Highland Park High School Band, and the solemn playing of “Taps.” The program concluded with guest speakers, including retired U.S. Army staff sergeant Sonja Marie Martin and U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Ryan M. Dunbar. Both residents expressed their admiration for the community.
“I really love Highland Park. The people, the area, are great. They really do welcome you in, and we love that about being here,” stated Martin.
The observance held additional significance as a reminder of the tragic July 4, 2022 shooting during the Independence Day parade. Martin voiced her admiration for the community’s resilience in overcoming adversity.
Linda Iovino, representing the American Legion Auxiliary of North Shore American Legion Post #738, shared memories of her late father, Neil P. Iovino. He served as a gunnery sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. Linda highlighted the importance of appreciating those who served.
“I have a deep appreciation for the veterans, now serving and the ones who have passed on and gave us freedom,” she said, stressing the sacrifices made for the country’s liberty.
By fostering community spirit, Highland Park demonstrates the power of unity and remembrance on Memorial Day.
