Chicago witnessed disorder during Memorial Day weekend as large gatherings of teens led to chaos. A vehicle struck five police officers, exacerbating the situation. Mayor Brandon Johnson now faces criticism from Alderman Raymond Lopez, who argues against Johnson’s stance on accountability.
Police Officers Injured
During the incidents, five officers were hit by a car traveling in the wrong direction. They were hospitalized in fair condition and are expected to recover. An 18-year-old suspect, taken into custody, awaits charges.
Lopez Criticizes Johnson
Lopez strongly criticized Mayor Johnson’s response. “Mayor Johnson does not understand consequences,” Lopez stated in a Fox News interview. He believes Johnson’s social media rhetoric lacks real accountability for teens or their parents, even when officers face life-threatening situations.
Local Politicians Demand Action
Some local politicians want parents held criminally responsible for their children’s actions. Johnson has not endorsed such measures. However, Lopez accuses the mayor of fostering unruly behavior with a lenient crime approach. He argues Johnson avoids effective solutions by saying arrests are not the answer.
“We can force them to get family counseling to learn how to be better parents,” Lopez insisted. “Our goal should be to support parents and not sacrifice our law enforcement officers because of a lack of values.”
Efforts to reach Mayor Johnson’s office for comment were unsuccessful.
