Governor Joins Protests Against Immigration Policies

Governor Mikie Sherrill participated in demonstrations at a New Jersey detention center, opposing the Trump administration’s immigration policies. She stood with protesters as detainees entered the fourth day of a hunger strike.

On Monday, Sherrill went to Delaney Hall in Newark, advocating for the detainees. Many family members shared their grievances about substandard food and poor medical care. Protesters rallied with signs and chants, seeking the release of the detainees.

Sherrill expressed that everyone deserves respectful treatment, regardless of their immigration status. During the visit, she comforted family members, showcasing her empathy.

As national protests against immigration policies grew, Sherrill frequently challenged the Trump administration. Previously, the administration sued her and the New Jersey attorney general over a law preventing law enforcement, including ICE agents, from wearing masks on duty.

Delaney Hall, a 1,000-bed facility, gained attention as a significant site in the administration’s immigration enforcement. It houses numerous immigrants from the Northeast following increased arrests in various locations.

This lawsuit marked the second time the administration attempted to challenge Sherrill’s immigration policies.
