Smithsonian Museum Plans on National Mall Face Setbacks

Plans to establish a Smithsonian museum on the National Mall hit a roadblock this week. Republican lawmakers introduced stipulations regarding ‘biological women’ and the president’s authority over the museum’s site.

The proposed language directed that the museum be located west of the Smithsonian Castle. However, it allowed President Donald Trump the choice to select an alternate location.

Political disagreements on transgender rights, coupled with President Trump’s extensive initiatives to transform Washington’s landscape, have disrupted a bipartisan initiative. This effort aimed to create a women’s history museum on the National Mall and had been progressing for over a decade.
